Assault on a Nurse in Ondo State: Where is NANNM?
Nurses and Midwives in Nigeria are now face with a myriad of physical, social, emotional and economic problems both intra-JOHESU and at work places which have a negative effects on the Nursing Profession, a noble and angelic one. And if we allow this to continue posterity will not forgive us.
To me, I think the main cause of these problems is ‘LACK of POWER’ from NANNM and its leadership both at local and State as well as national level.
We have all it takes academically, numerically and legally but why can’t we present our issues with assertiveness in administrative and clinical arena?
It seems Law No. 6 and 34 of 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene and Joost Elffers are lacking in our nursing leaders.
“Law 6 Court Attention at all Cost:
Everything is judged by its appearance; what is unseen counts for nothing. Never let yourself get
lost in the crowd, then, or buried in oblivion. Stand out. Be conspicuous, at all cost. Make yourself a magnet of attention by appearing larger, more colorful, more mysterious, than the bland and timid masses”
“Law 34 Be Royal in your Own Fashion:
Act like a King to be treated like one
The way you carry yourself will often determine how you are treated; In the long run, appearing vulgar or common will make people disrespect you. For a king respects himself and inspires the same sentiment in others. By acting regally and confident of your powers, you make yourself seem destined to wear a crown.”
With these, aforementioned laws I think our nursing leaders should live up to our expectations in all spheres of clinical and administrative astuteness.
Painfully, there is no active forum (Facebook,Twitter, Instagram, Telegram) where we can channel our issues or interact with our nursing leaders both at state and national level. It will amaze you to know that as ACNO I don’t know the name of my State NANNM Chairman talk less of interacting with him online or offline and a little over N5000 is deducted from my monthly salary as union dues
One of our colleagues in this forum opines that:
“In this 21st century the NANNM national chairman/president has absolutely no reasons to keep any of his social media handle redundant or inactive.
His Post is not for collecting union dues only. It is a call to serve the association, he should be proud of Nursing and NANNM. He can employ an ICT literate secretary to handle it”
My prayer:
Next time any NURSE who want to be elected as either Local/state chairman or national NANNM president MUST be active on social media and social media accounts must be known so that we can be interacting with him/her because Nursing is information-Intensive profession.
For example, I want to discuss with the NANNM chairman of OSTC, NANNM chairman Ondo State and NANNM National President on the case of a nurse who was assaulted by a doctor at Ondo State Trauma Centre (OSTC) but no avenue to do that.
