Benue Teaching Hospital Gets N450m to Fix Facilities
Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, has received N450m from the Hospital Assist Nigeria to enhance its services.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Terlumun Swende, who disclosed this during an interaction with journalists on Wednesday in Makurdi, said the fund was meant for revamping facilities in the hospital.
Some of the facilities include static and X-ray, mammography and CT scan machines.
He also said that the hospital, as part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Heineken African Foundation some years ago, received medical equipment worth 97,780 Euros.
The CMD stated further that the hospital had been able to secure accreditation from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, West African College of Surgeon and Physicians for departments whose accreditation had expired or were previously given partial accreditation.
Prof. Swende decried the hospital’s decaying facilities and a shortage of manpower and passionately appealed to the Federal Government to take urgent steps and take over the hospital.
“It would be far better if the Federal Government takes over the hospital as it will benefit the Benue people more. The Buhari administration should make haste and take over the hospital so that he can win the heart of Benue people.
“If this is done, it will take off the huge financial burden from the state. So, I agree with Governor Samuel Ortom for his call that Federal Government should take over the hospital as it has done in other states,” he appealed.
The CMD also said the Benue State government had so far spent over N20m on the treatment of over 400 victims of Fulani herdsmen attacks admitted in the hospital.
He decried the continuous brain drain of doctors in the country to other climes, attributing the development to the poor system in the country especially in the area of welfare.
