The Deputy President Hon. William Ruto presided over KMTC Graduation Ceremony where 8967 graduands were conferred various awards. This was the third time in a row that the Deputy President was presiding over the KMTC graduation.
The graduation recorded the highest number of graduands in KMTC’s history, with 1939 students being awarded with certificates, 6608 diplomas and 420 higher diplomas.
The students hail from 73 courses offered in 18 departments in the college.
The number of graduates from the college has been on a steady increase. In 2014, 6876 graduated while in 2015, 7500 students graduated. In 2016, 8042 students received various awards.
According to the Deputy President, the increase in the number of graduands is deliberately aimed to address the critical shortage of health workers, which currently stands at 60,000.
The DP said the Government had committed to support KMTC to the tune of Kshs 15 billion for expansion so that the College can more effectively deliver on its mandate.
All the 47 counties would get a campus in the next two years, he added.
The Deputy President was received at the colorful event by the Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Cleopa Mailu, Health PS,Mr. Julius Korir, KMTC Board Chairman Dr. Eng. David Muthoga, and KMTC Director Mr.Peter Tum. Others guests were deputy Governor of Isiolo County, Homabay and County Executive Committee members of Health.
Nine of the new campuses, said the Director, were presenting graduands for the first time. They include, Makueni, Mwingi, Bomet, Kaptumo and Rera. The others are Vihiga, Kapenguria, Kitale and Migori.
For the first time three new courses presented graduands. They are Nurse Anesthesia, Nephrology nursing and health systems management, added the Director.
The graduation is organized by a committee headed by the Deputy Director (Academics) Mrs. Nancy Michire.
