Don identifies Causes of Female infertility
A professor in the Department of Radiology, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Adewale Oguntoyinbo, has said that female infertility is caused by infections aggravated by multiple sexual partners, poor health facilities, and inadequate treatment of affected individuals.
He stated that several studies, including those by the broad-based World Health Organisation indicated that most cases of female infertility in Africa are caused by an infection acquired from miscarriages and induced abortions, as well as labour, delivery and sexually transmitted infections.
Oguntoyinbo, while delivering Unilorin’s 181st inaugural lecture last Thursday titled, ‘Delay is not denial: Invisible made visible, giving hope to the hopeless through medical imaging in management of female infertility,’ stated that female infertility was a symptom and not a disease.
He explained that it simply indicated a diseased or disordered state of the female reproductive organs.

The don identified other causes of female infertility to include, pelvic infections or peritoneal adhesions and adnexal masses; congenital or acquired anomalies of the genital tract; coital factors and age.
According to him, there is a natural decline in fertility from the age of 35 years.
He said that fertility in the female is limited by age. He added that women are fertile between the ages of 22 when puberty occurs and the mid to late forty years when the ovaries cease to mature their eggs and menopause occurs.
