Enugu Police Arrest Robbery Suspect in Pharmacy
The Enugu Police Command on Thursday arrested a robbery suspect, who allegedly attacked a pharmacy in Enugu metropolis.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the spokesman for the command, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said the suspect was arrested by operatives of the Central Police Station, Enugu.
Amaraizu, who gave the name of the suspect as Okwudili Okechukwu, said he was arrested after policemen acted swiftly on a distress call.
He said the suspect claimed that he was from Umuleri Community in Anambra State.
“It was gathered that the suspect, alongside other fleeing members of his gang, allegedly broke into the pharmacy at old University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Road and stole laptops and mobile phones, among others.
“It was further gathered that the hoodlums took N234,000.
“As they were in the shop, policemen attached to the Central Police Station, acting on distress call, swooped on them and the suspect was arrested,’’ Amaraizu said.
He said the stolen items were recovered from the suspect, while other members of his gang escaped.
Amaraizu said the suspect was helping the police in their investigation.
In another development, the Chairman of the Wamba Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Abubakar Abbas, has urged residents to expose criminals to security agencies in order to curtail crime in the area.
NAN reports that Abbas made the call on Thursday in Wamba while reacting to the clash between armed robbers and the police in the area.
He said exposing criminals would go a long way in curbing criminal activities, as well as ensuring peace in the area.
“We must be vigilant at all times and report suspected criminal activities to the security agencies for necessary action.
“This will go a long way in ensuring peace and speedy development in this area and the state at large,” he said.
Abbas commended the police for protecting lives and property in the council.
He assured them of the council’s continued support to enable them and other security agencies to succeed.
The council boss called on residents to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities, live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliations.
“On July 18, a policeman in the state was shot dead by suspected armed robbers along Akwanga-Wamba Road in the state.
“A police patrol team had ran into a road block mounted by the suspected criminals and a gun battle ensued.
“One of our officers sustained injury as a result of the incident and later died at the hospital while receiving treatment.
“A member of the gang was also killed while others escaped,” the police spokesman had said.
