Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti Canvasses Social Security Scheme For Indigent Patients

The Chief Medical Director of Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Dr Ebenezer Ajayi, has called for the introduction of a community-based social health insurance scheme to cater for indigent patients.  

Speaking in Ido-Ekiti, the CMD said the hospital had a number of indigent patients who could not afford the cost of out-of-pocket medical care.  

Ajayi said, “This hospital has been in the forefront of advocacy for the introduction of social health insurance programmes, especially the community-based types. The rich must take more than a passing interest in catering to the health of the vulnerable and poor in the society.  

“For as long as the majority of these indigent people are not covered by any form of health insurance, the establishment of funds through contributions from well-meaning individuals, government and non-governmental organisations, including religious bodies, will be a good way out of this challenge.”
