ICN Welcomes New Associate Director of Nursing and Health Policy Dr Alessandro
Dr Alessandro Stievano, former nurse research coordinator at the Centre of Excellence for Nursing Scholarship of IPASVI (now OPI) in Rome, Italy has joined the staff of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) as the new Associate Director of Nursing and Health Policy team.
“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Alessandro to the staff of ICN,” said Professor Thomas Kearns, ICN’s Interim Chief Executive Officer. “His extensive background in research, regulation and education will be key to helping ICN advance our socio-economic nursing policy agenda.”
Under the leadership of Howard Catton, ICN’s Director of Nursing and Health Policy, the new Associate Director will work with the Director to advocate and lead integrated strategies that reflect nursing – particularly in research, regulation and education – to deliver on ICN operational and strategic plan, and will provide responsive evidence-based policy processes 2 that are reflective of –environmental scanning, identification of problems, research processes, membership needs, donors and stakeholder requirements.
Dr Stievano previously worked at the Centre of Excellence for Nursing Scholarship since its inception in 2010 where he coordinated all the research activities of the Centre. Prior to this, he worked as a clinical nurse in the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Gemelli Polyclinic) and in an Organizational Health Trust, both in Rome.
He is a nurse research fellow in nursing for University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy and Adjunct Assistant Professor for Michigan State University, USA. An expert of learning processes, he received a master’s degree in Education (Rome Three University – RomeItaly) and in Sociology and Health Policy from Alma Mater University of Bologna – Italy. Dr Stievano is author of publications on a regional and international level. He is the President of the Italian Transcultural Nursing Association since its inception in 2008; and is a lecturer in undergraduate, post-graduate and PhD nursing courses for different Italian universities, including the University of Rome Tor Vergata – Rome.
