#JOHESUStrike2018: JOHESU, FMC Asaba Management at War Over Use of Trainee Medical Officers
Angered by skeletal medical services being rendered by trainee officers at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba, members of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) Asaba branch, on Saturday raised the alarm over use of inexperienced staff in the hospital.
Currently, JOHESU members across the country are on strike action to press home their demands.
The situation has grounded many hospitals, while families have evacuated patients.
Speaking to DAILY POST, the Chairman of the Union, Mr. Christopher Ikpehe said: “We will descend on the management of FMC for deploying inexperienced medical workers to service”.
“It is against the rules, we will not take. This is not known to unsuspecting members of the public that FMC Asaba had violated the striking JOHESU rules.
“We told the management that using inexperienced persons was wrong; the management at present is using IT Students, Corps’ members, forcing them to attend to patients. It very wrong and unacceptable”.
Dr. Ikperhe said that interns in the laboratory department cannot effectively carryout tests and examinations and come up with right results.
But in a swift reaction, the FMC Asaba Chief Medical Director, Dr. Victor Osiatuma lambasted JOHESU.
“Doctors are to save lives as part of our medical oath, therefore the entire hospital cannot be shut down. Our duty is to save lives, to hell with JOHESU, we will be working”, he told DAILY POST.
On the allegation of using inexperienced for medical services, Dr. Osiatuma said: “We will continue to use the officers on hand to save the lives of the patients, if JOHESU wants to call off strike it should and not telling us what to do as doctors”.
