Kuwait Summons Philippine Envoy On Filipino Nurse Ban, To Probe Issue
he Philippine government’s suspension of the deployment of workers to Kuwait has prompted the Kuwait foreign ministry to summon the Philippine envoy there.
Lawmakers in Kuwait are also forming a committee to look into the issue, Kuwait media reported.
Kuwait deputy foreign minister Khaled Sulaiman Al-Jarallah said Philippine ambassador Renato Villa was asked to lift the “ban.”
Jarallah added Kuwait ambassador to the Philippines Musaed Al-Thuwaikh would meet with Philippine officials over the issue.
According to Jarallah, Villa met with the assistant foreign minister for consular affairs where he was notified of Kuwait’s “regret and bewilderment” over the development, and was told that this does not serve the common interests of the two countries.
Jarallah also said Villa was told about the “freedoms and rights” enjoyed by expatriate communities.
Last Jan. 19, the Philippine labor department suspended the deployment of workers to Kuwait, pending the cause of deaths of seven Filipino workers there
There are about 276,000 Filipino workers in Kuwait.
Meanwhile, Kuwait lawmakers are to form a committee to investigate the maid recruitment problem.
