Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria Honours Adadevoh, Others
The Lead Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist, Dr Stella Adadevoh, who died in 2014 after contracting the Ebola virus while treating a patient in Lagos, has been honoured by the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria with a star award during its maiden public lecture and awards event held in Abuja.
The National President of the association, Prof Ngim Ngim, in his speech, said that Adadevoh paid the ultimate price so that others might live.
He said, “Adadevoh is the only recipient of the top award because we believe that not enough has been done to appreciate her sacrifice and to immortalise her. This is a call to the government at all levels to take steps to immortalise the great Nigerian for the role she played in curbing the Ebola outbreak in our country. Some of us might not have been here today if she did not take the action she took.”
Also honoured are the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole and past presidents of the MDCAN.
At the event, the President of the Nigeria Medical Association, Prof Adedayo Faduyile, warned that the medical space in Nigeria had been invaded by outsiders, who were using e-medicine to reach out to Nigerian patients.
He said, “We must not fail to key into e-health and digital medicine in Nigeria. The world has gone technological and now we attend to patients through the electronic media. We now review results of investigations electronically. With e-health, the space between medical doctors and their patients is shortened worldwide.
People are achieving Universal Health Coverage using e-health.
“It will be difficult for us to have adequate number of health workers to take care of everybody, but, through e-health, we can achieve and surpass that.
“Today, we have doctors that can consult from anywhere around the world. Indians and other medical personnel from outside Nigeria are invading us to steal our patients. They are taking charge of the medical industry and we need to key into it and be part of the technological age to improve on our health care system.”
