Medical lab scientists in Nigeria seek better training
The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has urged the Federal Government to expedite action on recommendations made by stakeholders at the first Medical Laboratory Science Education Summit held recently in Abuja.
The outcome of the summit was a call to enhance the training to produce highly competent, ethnically-minded and patient-centered professionals that can compete favourably with their peers across the globe.
Speaking at the induction of 62 graduates of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, the Acting Registrar/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), MLSCN, Mr Tosan Erhabor, said the council during the summit brought together critical stakeholders from all over the nation who rubbed minds on ways to harmonise the curriculum for BMLS programme in tertiary institutions.
He warned the graduates, the sixth set, to be produced by the university, that on no account should any of them attempt to commence National Youth Service without first completing their internship because of pecuniary gains.
“As you enter into the phase of professional practice, you should always keep in mind the importance of External Quality Assurance (EQA) in guaranteeing quality and reliability of test results on a continuous basis,” he said.
The Acting Registrar appreciated the cordial relationship between the University and the MLSC, stressing that the determination was to sustain the training and development of the future leaders and practitioners of the Medical Laboratory Science profession in the country.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Tunji Ibiyemi, urged parents to propagate the qualities of Achievers University, Owo to the public.
He said the quality of any university was not in the buildings erected in the campus, but the attainment in academic pursuit, using Harvard University as an example of one of the best institutions that had no expanded structures but quality teaching and research.
He promised that the institution was poised to achieve its vision of becoming one of the best private universities in Nigeria and beyond.
