Nurse-led NGO, Your Concerned Nurse (YCN) Takes Malaria Fight to Lagos, Ibadan Slums
A group of Nigerian Registered Nurses is taking the fight against the dreaded epidemic- malaria to the slums and hard to reach areas of Lagos and Oyo State. Members of Your Concerned Nurse (YCN), a Non-governmental Organization recently visited Beere community in Ibadan, Oyo State and Ikosi-Ketu a slum in Lagos State where they distributed insecticide treated nets, gave health talks on the prevention of malaria, conducted free malaria test and also distributed prophylaxis (Fansidar) as part of the activities to mark the World Malaria Day celebrated on 25th of April every year.
Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite called P.falciparum. It is transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes with symptoms such as fever. If left untreated, Malaria can kill. Children and pregnant women bear the brunt of the disease as more than 70% of deaths due to Malaria are recorded among children less than five years of age.
Speaking with Nursesarena.com the founder of the initiative Nurse Ojumu Dolapo said the gesture is aimed at contributing to the elimination of Malaria in Nigeria before the global set target date of 2030. She therefore calls for more volunteers to join the Nurse led initiative to kick Malaria out of Nigeria.
