Royal College of Nursing wants security review after stabbing at Leicester Royal Infirmary
The Royal College of Nursing has said violence against its members is never justified after staff at Leicester Royal Infirmary became involved in a knife attack this morning.
A man was stabbed outside the hospital at around 2am. The attacker then entered the accident and emergency department, threw the knife at a nurse and grabbed a monitor and smashed it over the head of an elderly man.
The knifeman was wrestled to the floor by security staff and another nurse.
A spokesman for the Royal College of Nursing said: “We hope that those injured or affected by this incident will be okay.
“There is never a justification for being violent or abusive towards health care staff. No one should go to work thinking they will be assaulted or won’t be in a safe place to care for their patients.
“When incidents of this kind happen, our experience is that employers do review their assessment of health and safety risks to see if additional safety measures should be applied to protect their staff, and we would expect the trust to review these arrangements and ensure staff affected by the incident are supported.”
