UDS Parallel Medical Programme: New Medical Program Out in Next Month
The University for Development Studies (UDS) is preparing to rollout a parallel medical programme in January 2018 in response to a persistent sharp increase in demand for medicine.
This year, the number of applicants who were shortlisted for admission to do medicine was 722 but the university could only admit 100 students.
Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, Vice Chancellor of UDS, who disclosed this in Wa during the 25th Matriculation Ceremony of the University, said interested applicants would soon be invited for interview to select successful ones for admission.
Prof Ayum Teye also announced that the University was on the verge of introducing new academic faculty and programmes, adding that these have been approved by the Academic Programmes Committee (APC) and the academic Board for implementation in the 2018/2019 Academic Year.
He said the new Faculty of Geosciences will come with programmes including Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS); Bachelor of Science Health Education and Promotion; Bachelor of Science Medical Records and Health Information Systems; Bachelor of Science Medical Imaging Technology; Bachelor of Science Anaesthesia; Bachelor of Science Dietetics; Certificate in Law; and Pharm D.
The Vice Chancellor of UDS said the University would continue to offer programmes that were relevant to Ghana’s development aspirations, and to the enhancement of the quality of life of the communities.
“Management is very much committed to students’ welfare, and would continue to improve conditions in the hostels on the University’s campuses to make life comfortable for all students”, he said.
Prof Ayum Teye expressed appreciation to landlords and landladies across the various campuses of the University for partnering them in providing accommodation for the students, but noted with concern that one area that has not been properly handled by owners of these private hostels had been the security and safety of their students.
He called on traditional rulers, opinion leaders and owners of hostel facilities to take appropriate steps to beef-up security in private hostels.
He cautioned students against flouting the law on helmet use on their campuses; warning that any student caught riding on campus without crash helmet would be made to face the full rigours of the law.
While urging the fresh men and women to join any legitimate student clubs and associations that appeal to them, Prof. Ayum Teye also warned against the practice of occultism which he said was outlawed in the University.
Meanwhile, the University has admitted a total of 7,971 undergraduate applicants out of a total of 11,531 applications received for the 2017/2018 Academic Year.
This comprises 4,709 (59%) males and 3,262 (41%) females showing an increase in female admission from 35% last year and a decrease in male admission which was 65% last year.
The Vice Chancellor also used the occasion to launch the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the University to be held under the theme: “UDS @ 25: Impact on National Development through Practical Higher Education”.
