Dr. Judith Lasker is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Lehigh University. She is author of Hoping to Help; The Promises and Pitfalls of Global Health Volunteering (Cornell U. Press, 2016), which examines the impact on host communities and on volunteers of short-term international programs in health.
She interviewed over one hundred people involved in such programs as organizers, volunteers, and host country sta and surveyed almost two hundred organizations that sponsor volunteers. She has spoken about her research and recommendations for making volunteer trips more valuable for all involved to audiences around the U.S. and in several other countries. She is also co-founder of the Coalition for Responsible Short-Term Experiences in Global Health.
In 2014, Judith was awarded the Centennial Medal by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard for “contributions to society as they have emerged from one’s graduate education at Harvard.”
